We will develop and use research-based learning pathways as the basis for assessments aligned to selected fifth-grade mathematics standards. The test blueprint will inform item development for two assessment components of the PIE system: instructionally embedded assessments and an end-of-year assessment. Test items aligned to the learning pathways will be developed using Universal Design for Learning and evidence-centered design principles.  

We will design the PIE online platform to support delivery of PIE assessments, teacher assessment literacy resources, and on-demand student progress and summary reports.  

We will develop a PIE system theory of action and underlying propositions as a basis for validity evaluation.  

The PIE assessment system will be evaluated during a pilot study. The pilot study, which will include classroom observations, teacher interviews, and focus groups, will yield evidence of the feasibility of the PIE project for broader implementation.  

The PIE dissemination plan includes the distribution of materials generated throughout the span of the project, including reports of lessons learned during the design process and research outcomes. The focus of Year 4 dissemination is aimed at future implementation efforts.
